Pundit expects 'more bids' as Newcastle source reveals Nick Pope medical news

Newcastle United may look to sell players before signing any more stars this summer.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Magpies’ summer business.

On Tuesday (21 June), a Newcastle source told this site that Nick Pope will have a medical at the club on Wednesday (22 June) ahead of becoming the club’s second summer signing.

On 7 June, Isaac Hayden joined Norwich City on loan until the end of the 2022-23 season though it is expected he will join the club permanently at the end of the campaign.

On 22 June, Newcastle also confirmed Freddie Woodman had joined Preston North End on a permanent basis after this site first revealed talks on 10 June.

McAvennie claims more players may have to leave before more arrive.

“Maybe players need to leave before some can come in,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“We know they have money but it might be about knowing where they need to replace and what needs to happen.

“It can be about sorting your squad out sometimes before then going and putting more bids in.

“The owners are still figuring it out and it might take a while for these deals to happen.”

As it stands, the Magpies have only confirmed the signing of Matt Targett from Aston Villa this summer.

He joined the club after a successful loan spell during the second half of the 2021-22 season.
