Pundit issues Lloris confession after Tottenham open talks on deal ahead of January

Alan Hutton has admitted he thought Hugo Lloris’ “time was up” at Tottenham with talks over a new contract underway.

The former Spurs defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, hailed the 34-year-old for turning things around at Spurs under Antonio Conte.

As revealed by Football Insider on Saturday (11 December), Spurs have opened talks with Lloris over a new contract in north London.

A Spurs source told this site the shot-stopper is keen to extend his stay at Tottenham, with his current terms expiring next summer.

A such, the Lilywhites want to tie down the France international rather than risk losing him on a free transfer.

Hutton admitted Lloris has shown a remarkable turnaround in form to earn himself an extended stay at Spurs.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He’s won the World Cup and he’s the captain. He brings a lot to that squad, especially experience-wise.

“He did have a dip in form before Antonio Conte and I thought, maybe, his time was up.

“But he’s come roaring back. He’s the head figure, he looks like it in the dressing room.

“Of course you want your experienced guys there. You want them to sign contracts and be at the club, especially when they’re so influential.

“It’ll be good to see. It’s even better to see his form has picked back up to where we know it can be.”

Lloris is only 12 appearances off playing 400 games for the Lilywhites.

He has been a mainstay this season and has not missed a single minute of Premier League action.

Meanwhile, summer signing Pierluigi Gollini has been limited to just eight cup appearances this season.
