Pundit's 'heard noises out of Rangers' as Aston Villa funding 'huge' January deals

Paul Robinson has tipped Aston Villa to splash out on new signings in January after the arrival of Steven Gerrard.

The former England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested players would want to join the Villans due to the 41-year-old, much like at Rangers.

A Villa source told Football Insider (12th November) chief executive Christian Purslow promised Gerrard “huge” funds will be made available in upcoming transfer windows.

Speaking to Villa TV, Gerrard revealed he believes he can do “exciting things” with the Midlands giants.

Robinson, who used to be England teammates with Gerrard and is well connected in the game, insisted the new boss would be a big lure for potential signings.

Robinson told Football Insider’s Dylan Childs: “I think he’s got a great opportunity down there.

“He takes over a football club that are a huge football club with a massive fanbase. He’s obviously been given assurances he’ll be given a certain amount of money in January to bring players in.

“I think the nucleus of the squad is there. I’ve heard the noises coming out of Rangers, players were at Rangers because of him.

“I think he’s got an opportunity at a club that’s potentially one of the top six in the country. They are currently sitting fifth bottom of the Premier League but have ambitions of playing in Europe.

“He’s got half a season to look at what he’s got, assess what he’s got, two transfer windows, January and the summer, ready to build for next season.

“He’s got a free hit at Aston Villa. It’s going to be next season when he’s judged.

“Build in January, keep the club in the Premier League and then I think you judge him this time next season.”
