Rangers reported manager update is one of the most mystifying decisions made by board

COMMENT

Steven Gerrard has emerged as the reported number one candidate to take the reins at Ibrox long-term – and it appears that the Rangers board don’t have the slightest idea what they are doing.

According to the Scottish Sun, the Liverpool icon is in talks to take over at Ibrox and it is one of the most mystifying decisions to come from the Gers boardroom in recent years.

Despite what Gerrard achieved as a player, to date he has managed as many senior games as any member of the first-team squad at Ibrox and his inexperience should immediately have seen him taken out of the running.

With season ticket renewals open, Gers fans were hoping for someone who could help the Light Blues close the gap to bitter rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership and take the title back.

The former England ace would no doubt have lots to pass on to players but with only six months under his belt as Liverpool’s Under-18s head coach then there isn’t an argument that can be made that could convince even the biggest Steven Gerrard fan that he has the experience necessary to take over at Ibrox.

If the Rangers board do push on with this it is going to end in tears for the Light Blues and could almost certainly see the Gers in a similar position in 12 months when Gerrard gets sacked after failing to win the title.
