Rangers-Clement twist ‘would be one of most shocking things I’ve seen in football’
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers could allow Philippe Clement to take the Belgium job without receiving compensation in a new twist.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the change could come around Christmas.
Football Insider revealed on 22 November Clement has huge admirers within the Belgium FA after his former chief executive and mentor Vincent Mannaert was appointed as the governing body’s sports director.
Domenico Tedesco is potentially the brink of losing his job with the national team, potentially opening up the role for the Rangers boss.
Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider that the Ibrox club could receive up to £3million in compensation if Clement were to become the next Belgium manager.
He has struggled to keep up with Celtic so far this season with their Glasgow rivals already 11 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership after just 12 games.
Rangers could allow Clement to join Belgium compensation free, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s a funny story.
“The rumours are that there’s a £3million compensation clause in his contract. I think Rangers fans would say: forget the compensation, just take him.
“I’ve been arguing that he has to remain in place, and I still think he’s a good manager – with a squad like Belgium’s, he could do well.
“I don’t think there’ll be any compensation if Belgium do come in.
“This may be a situation where both parties decide to move on.
“If there is to be a change, it will likely come around Christmas.

“If Rangers get £3million from Belgium, it would be one of the more shocking things I’ve seen in football.
“It would be great news for the club.”
