Rangers could become 'even more dangerous' as dressing room verdict issued after manager news - Whelan

Noel Whelan has insisted dressing room “leaders” will be “rallying the troops” at Rangers after their title fight with Celtic took a dramatic twist.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Gers could be a “more dangerous” opponent in the wake of Steven Gerrard’s departure.

Aston Villa confirmed Gerrard’s appointment last week (November 11th) to bring his successful spell at Rangers to an end.

Former Gers defender Alan Hutton told Football Insider the shock departure has left the club “in limbo”, and claimed the news will have “spurred Celtic on” in the title fight.

Gerrard departed with the Ibrox side just four points ahead of their Old Firm rivals in the Scottish Premiership.

However, Whelan insisted “wounded animal” Rangers could become “more dangerous” as a result of losing the Englishman.

“There’s no way this title fight is going to peter out just because Rangers have lost a manager – absolutely not,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“In adversity, you always fight – and those Rangers players will fight.

“They’ve got a really good group of players there, great togetherness – and when you’ve got your back against the wall, sometimes you can be an even more dangerous team to play against.

“I don’t think the Celtic team or fans will be taking anything for granted or presuming Rangers will have an exodus of players.

“Right now, Rangers are a wounded animal – they’ve lost someone who got on really well with the players and got the best out of them.

“But they are a very experienced group, international players in that squad. The leaders in that squad will be rallying the troops as we speak.”
