Rangers manager Graeme Murty and director of football Mark Allen have transformed the Gers’ squad in the January transfer window with seven signings made before Wednesday night’s midnight transfer deadline.
After replacing Pedro Caixinha in October, this was Murty’s first transfer window in charge as well as the first since the club revamped their recruitment team under Allen.
With only two first-team players leaving Ibrox last month – Carlos Pena and Danny Wilson – Murty has added more depth to a squad that was lacking in any real alternatives beyond the regular starting XI while also greatly improving the quality of his side.
Since Murty’s first signings arrived at the beginning of the month, the Gers have won all three of their competitive games as well as two wins from two in the Florida Cup against Brazilian sides Atletico Mineiro and Corinthians.
The Ibrox giants look to have found a particular type of player – young, British and hungry for regular games – and primarily recruited using that template although have also added a couple of experienced campaigners to the squad too.
For the first time since returning to the Scottish Premiership at the beginning of last season, the Gers look like they might finally be equipped to make a decent crack of challenging Celtic at the top of the table.
