Sheffield United legend: Lundstram would ‘tear it up’ at Rangers amid key development

John Lundstram is a player in Steven Gerrard’s image and would make a top signing for Rangers this summer.

That is according to ex-Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Lundstram was named on the Blades’ released list on 1st June.

The news comes as little surprise to United fans who have been anticipating him leaving the club for some time.

The Athletic reported in January that Rangers were long-time admirers of the 26-year-old midfielder.

But this site revealed in February that he had no plans to move to Ibrox as he had offers on the table from several Premier League clubs.

However, Kenny claims that Lundstram would be a hit at Ibrox if he had a change of heart.

“I don’t see why he couldn’t have success in Scotland,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“The back end of his Sheffield United career has not been what he wanted.

“It ended with relegation and when you’re not wanting a new contract then the fans will turn on you, so it’s been a difficult period this last six months or so.

“But it would be a fresh start for him and I’m sure he’d have no problem tearing up the Scottish league with Rangers.

“He’s a box-to-box midfielder, a big, strong lad. He’s got a lot of energy too, similar to Gerrard in a way. On a free, it’s a no-brainer.”

Kenny told this site in April that Lundstram was being used as a scapegoat by Blades fans.

He featured 28 times for the relegated side in 2020-21.
