Rangers must reward star man with more than money after top class performances
Rangers must reward right back James Tavernier with more than just a new contract after establishing himself as the club’s key figure during his time at Ibrox.
The 27-year-old arrived in Glasgow from Wigan Athletic back in 2015, following spells at the likes of Bristol City and Newcastle United in England.
He has gone on to become on of the very first names on the team sheet with his top class performances, no matter who the manager has been, and that has continued into the current campaign.
With 32 appearances under his belt this season, including every one of the Gers’ league matches, and rumours of potential transfer suitors circling, the club have taken the move to tie him down to a new deal, putting pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year deal on Wednesday.

The mainstay is well deserving of the new deal after his starring role in the Rangers’ back line, as well as his contributions to the attack, with 23 goals and 38 assists to his name, but he should be handed even more than just money.
As a consistently top performer in the side, it is time that Tavernier is given the responsibility of the captain’s armband at Ibrox following his new contract, having led out the Light Blues against Ayr United.
The current holder, Lee Wallace, has made just seven appearances this season after undergoing surgery on a groin injury, with Jason Holt seemingly the regular stand in replacement, although Bruno Alves was given the chance to lead when fit.
However, Tavernier is set to be at Ibrox for the foreseeable future, and with no signs his performances are set to drop any time soon, he will spend much of that time in the starting XI.
He is the natural choice to represent the club both on and off the pitch, and with his bright performances on match day, he will no doubt lead by example.
