Rangers’ reported chase of Fenerbahce defender Martin Skrtel could see the defender make a £4million switch to Ibrox and link up with former Anfield team-mate Steven Gerrard – but the Gers should have learned their lesson from recent signings and scrap the pursuit immediately.
After signing the likes of Bruno Alves, Phil Senderos and Clint Hill with limited success in recent years, signing old defenders who used to play at the highest level hasn’t worked out well for the Ibrox giants.
Turkish news outlet Sabah had reported that the Light Blues had tabled a big-money bid for Skrtel although the Scottish Sun has since disputed that report, claiming the Gers would not spend near £4million on a player who is due to enter the final year of his contract and is in the twilight of his career.
There’s no doubt that the Gers need new defenders – and quickly – but spending the sort of money mentioned for the Slovakian powerhouse would be absolute madness when it could be better used elsewhere.
If the Fenerbahce defender was available for a much-reduced transfer fee then there could be some merit to it but at the fee reported, director of football Mark Allen and Gerrard need to look elsewhere for a new defensive rock.
