Rangers ready to hijack move for in-demand 5ft 8 star after Allen contacts Gerrard – report

Steven Gerrard is already having a big impact before he’s officially in the Ibrox hotseat, as he contemplates hijacking John McGinn’s move south, according to a report.

The Daily Record claims that Gerrard was alerted to McGinn’s availability by director of football Mark Allen, who has been watching McGinn for months.

McGinn has been made aware of Rangers’ interest and now it’s in Gerrard’s hands, although he will face tough competition his signature.

Celtic have been linked with the player persistently although they’ve yet to make a move, and the Daily Record claims that Premier League sides are also interested, with bids expected to start at £3million.

Football Insider verdict:

McGinn is one of the most in-demand players in Scotland and Gerrard would make a real statement by landing the player that’s been linked to Celtic and Premier League sides. Rangers are definitely a much more attractive option with Gerrard at the helm, but you have to think that even given that, McGinn would prefer a shot in the Premier League. However, if he’s settled in Scotland, a shot at becoming a Rangers legend under Gerrard could be extremely tempting. There’s no doubt that he be a great addition to the Rangers side. However, the new Rangers manager doesn’t have a limitless supply of cash and the question he’ll be asking himself is can he get better value for money elsewhere? With Premier League sides involved there’s every chance that the price for McGinn could rise to £5million and that would surely put him out of reach of Gerrard and Rangers. Fans will be delighted that their side is being linked to quality players like this though and will be buzzing at the prospect of significant business this summer.
