Whelan: Rangers star Morelos will be a Premier League hit as offers confirmed

Premier League teams should take a chance on Rangers star Alfredo Morelos despite his famously fiery temperament.

That is according to ex-Scottish Premiership and Premier League striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Morelos confirmed that Rangers had previously received bids for his services.

He told Caracol Radio, a network in his native Colombia: “There were many difficulties with Rangers about my departure because proposals came in and the club asked for more money.

“One of my big dreams is to play in the English Premier League.”

The 24-year-old has picked up 54 yellow cards and seven red in 243 games as a professional and his reckless disposition has long been a worry.

Whelan acknowledged Morelos’ unpredictable nature but claimed that his natural ability would allow him to shine bright in the Premier League.

“A goalscorer is always going to attract the eye and attention of every club,” he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“It comes down to whether you can manage his attitude and trust him, that’s always been my biggest issue with him.

“Also, you’ve got to understand that the Premier League is a lot different to the Scottish Premiership. It’s a massive step up. Whether he can do it remains to be seen but he is a natural goalscorer.

“In the Premier League, you know you’re gonna get more quality and chances from the players you’re playing with. No disrespect to Rangers but you’d be playing with a slightly better player with a bit more ability in the Premier League, that’s for sure. He’s worth taking a chance on.”

Football Insider revealed in February that the striker’s value could exceed the £15million mark if he continues to impress in Europe.

He has scored 15 and assisted 12 in 36 games in all competitions this season, with three goals and seven assists coming in the Europa League.

In other news, finance expert Kieran Maguire claims the “unbridgeable” gap between Celtic and Rangers and the rest of Scottish football is going to grow wider.
