Ross McCrorie: This Rangers legend helped me rise up to first-team
Rangers star Ross McCrorie has revealed advice from Ibrox legend Ian Durrant has helped him push on and become a regular first-team player for the Gers.
McCrorie worked under Durrant in the Gers Academy before linking up with him once more when he joined Dumbarton – where Durrant is now assistant manager – on loan 12 months ago.
The 19-year-old has been a revelation since making the breakthrough earlier this season after injuries to first-team star Danny Wilson and Bruno Alves.
McCrorie revealed that Durrants words of advice gave him “belief” despite being sent away to play elsewhere on loan.
“When I was with the Rangers Under-17s, he was the one that moved me up to the Under-20s,” McCrorie said, as quoted by the Sunday Post.
“He then made me captain of that team.
“When I went out on loan to Ayr United in 2016, he assured me that if I kept working hard, then I’d make it. That gave me great belief.
“Ian Durrant’s a Rangers legend, so I took his word for it. He took me under his wing when I was one of the younger ones in the Under-20s.
“It was a huge confidence boost. I knew he had seen something in me when he took me aside for chats.”
Since making his first-team debut earlier this season, the former Rangers youth captain has gone on to make 18 appearances for the Light Blues and has wowed fans with his performances in defence and midfield.
Alongside twin brother Robby – a goalkeeper in the Gers youth system – McCrorie recently signed a new deal which will keep him at his boyhood heroes until the summer of 2022.
As part of the Gers first-team squad, Ross has travelled to Florida for the Light Blues winter training camp before they face Brazilian sides Corinthians and Atletico Mineiro in the Florida Cup next week.
The Gers return to domestic action on January 21st when they face Highland League minnows Fraserburgh in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.
