Rangers defender Declan John thinks the Gers’ training under Steven Gerrard has already surpassed last season’s and admits he thinks the new manager’s criticism of the squad’s fitness is “fair” after getting to work at their pre-season camp in Spain.
The Gers defender also believes his move to Ibrox has resurrected his international career with Wales after returning to the side in the recent friendlies with China and Mexico – saying his move north has been “massive” for his cap hopes.
After agreeing Gerrard’s criticism of the squad’s, John revealed that the tempo had been “really high” and he feels fit going into the new campaign.
“Yeah, I think that’s fair to say. I think we’ve seen in the last two or three sessions that the tempo has already gone a lot higher,” John told STV.

“The training we had last season wasn’t as high tempo and in the last two or three days, it’s been really high. All the boys have come back fit so we’re just hoping to do well this season.
“It’s been massive (for his Wales prospects). If I didn’t move to Rangers then I don’t think I would be back playing with Wales.”
Football Insider verdict:
John has really impressed since arriving at Ibrox from Cardiff City in August and it was a good bit of business to tie him down to a permanent deal. The Welshman is almost certain to start the season as the Gers’ first-choice left-back and will be keen to continue the form he showed last season. John really impressed during his appearances with Ryan Giggs’ Wales side and the chance to work with two of the best players of their generation in Giggs and Gerrard will surely help the 22-year-old continue to improve. The former Cardiff ace built up a good understanding with Jamie Murphy down the left last season for the Gers and that will be something Gerrard is likely to want to continue to nurture as he makes his mark on the squad. John needs to work on his defending but it’s clear there’s a really talented player there – if Gerrard can get the best out of him then he will be a massive player this season.
