Former Newcastle United and West Ham boss has backed Tottenham striker Harry Kane in his decision to pull out of the England squad for their upcoming friendly matches.
The Three Lions are set to take on international giants Brazil and Germany at Wembley over the current international break, but will do so without several of their top stars after they pulled out of the squad for various reasons.
Kane, alongside club team mates Dele Alli and Harry Winks, withdrew from the squad after reportedly picking up minor injury blows, which has been seen as a controversial move by some considering Mauricio Pochettino has named him as available for the club’s clash with Arsenal in a week’s time.
However the decision has been backed by former England manager Allardyce, who believes a rest is exactly what the forward needs after his impressive goal scoring exploits this season.
He told Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT (09/11, 06:00): “It will be good for him, it will, honestly. It’ll be good for England in the future and it’ll be good for Tottenham.
“Harry Kane’s situation is that he’s the main striker for Tottenham and there’s not a lot of back-up and he’s going to play a huge amount of games.
“As England manager you are negotiating with the Premier League managers all the time to try and have a reasonable relationship and to get the players you need.
“If the medical report says he is unfit to play at this stage in just a few days’ time, then he could be fit for the game Tottenham game when the international break is finished.
“So it could be purely legitimate that it this moment in time he’s not fit enough to play.”
Current manager of the Three Lions Gareth Southgate, who took over from Allardyce in a temporary capacity before being handed the role on a permanent basis, has suggested that there was “no way” Kane would have been able to play and has called Pochettino’s decision to allow him to play against Arsenal a “risk”.
The 24-year-old has netted 13 goals in 14 appearances across all competitions this season, currently joint top with Sergio Aguero at the top of the Premier League top scorers’ list, as Kane looks to pick up his third successive golden boot award.
