Jamie Redknapp delivered a three-word verdict on Tottenham defender Serge Aurier after the 1-1 draw between Tottenham and Brighton saying, “He’s a liability”.
Aurier conceded a penalty almost immediately after Harry Kane had given Spurs the lead early in the second half.
From kick-off, Aurier clipped Jose Izquierdo’s heels in the penalty box and Pascal Gross just beat Huge Lloris who got a hand to the ball.
Redknapp was talking on the Sky Sports broadcast of the game on Tuesday night (Sky Sports, Tuesday, 7.30pm) and his verdict was echoed by Graeme Souness who said, “He’s clumsy and he’s capable of doing that all the time.”
Tottenham couldn’t find the winner in a strangely muted game and they now sit two points behind Liverpool in fourth place in the league having played the same number of games.
Football Insider verdict:
This isn’t the first time Aurier has done this and tonight it was costly. There was no need to bring him down and he could easily have got out of his path. Aurier is a liability and he needs to curb this side of his game if he’s going to be a regular first-team player for Pochettino. If that penalty hadn’t been given away it would have been a valuable three points for Tottenham, and a big morale boost for the FA Cup semi-final against Man United. As it is, they go into the huge game at the weekend having draw with Brighton and lost to Man City. That’s not great.
