The Scottish Sun has earlier reported that the Light Blues had offered a six-figure fee for Northern Ireland international Jones, 23, as Graeme Murty continues his overhaul of the first-team at Ibrox, but made no mention of any extras tied into the deal.
He is not the only forward on Rangers’ radar at the moment, as it is also understood that Nottingham Forest striker Jason Cummings is in Glasgow ahead of completing a loan move until the end of the season.
Jamie Murphy is another attacker to have been signed up already by the Light Blues this month on a loan deal from Brighton as Murty and director of football Mark Allen aim to revamp the squad.
Jones has been a hit for Killie this season, making 25 appearances in all competitions and scoring three goals in the process.
The wide-forward, who can play on the left or up front, even netted against Celtic in October when Steve Clarke earned a shock 1-1 draw at Parkhead.
Football Insider verdict
Jones would be a very good buy for Rangers, but the current squad that Murty has is starting to look quite lop-sided. The Kilmarnock ace is very accomplished on the left wing, which is also where Murphy, Josh Windass and Declan John have proven themselves able to play. Jones can play up front and behind a striker though, which may suggest that Murty sees the 23-year-old as a back-up in that area of the squad. Murty and Allen should try to add more depth on the right hand side of the pitch. Daniel Candeias has done well there this season and Murphy can also play there, although he is more natural on the other side. Could Windass be off?
In other Rangers news, the Gers are also ready to lodge a formal bid for this top-flight playmaker.
