Newcastle’s search for a striker in the January window is ongoing and Mike Ashley has signed off on the Newcastle plans, according to a reliable journalist.
Lee Ryder of the Chronicle posted the update to his personal Twitter page on Tuesday morning, while adding that Mike Ashley has approved the transfer plan for the rest of the month.

Keith Downie, the north east reporter for Sky Sports, reported that Newcastle are in the hunt for a striker with a fee said to be £20m.
Talking on the Sky Sports podcast as quoted in the Chronicle (8.19am) Downie said: “I don’t think that means three £20million players. It probably means £20million all in. He’s going to have to get to work pretty soon.
“He has a list of options and he’s got top targets – that was what happened in the summer as well but he moved down that list of targets to the point where he ended up taking Joselu.”
Pete Graves, a Sky Sports reporter, said that while Newcastle fans want to know the identity of the £20m striker, the club are determined to keep him a secret for fear of the deal getting complicated.
He confirmed that the fee for the striker is £20m while adding that the Kenedy deal is a straight loan.
All #nufc fans want to know the identity of this striker target, but it's a sensitive situation. Told the fee is 20m, but club determined to keep it quiet till it's done, to avoid added competition. M/W awaiting Kenedy announcement. Straight loan.

Football Insider verdict:
Exciting news for Newcastle fans. With the Kenedy deal on the verge of being announced it looks like Newcastle are homing in a striker who will cost them £20m. No one knows who this is, but Leicester’s Islam Slimani has been mentioned. He may well be leaving Leicester and a fee of around £20m has been mentioned, but there’s no confirmation that he’s the man Benitez is targeting. However, with Ashley having apparently signed off on any remaining deals, it does sound like Newcastle will have a new goal scorer before the end of the month.
In other Newcastle United transfer news, the club are negotiating a record breaking deal for an attacker.
