Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic could return for the Premier League game against Newcastle United on Saturday, according to a report.

The Sun claim that he the Swedish superstar has returned to full training for Jose Mourinho’s side and is pushing for a place on the bench at Old Trafford.

The 36-year-old suffered a season-ending cruciate knee ligament injury in April and was released by the club in June.

Mourinho convinced the forward him to return to Old Trafford, re-signing the striker on a one-year deal in August.

He had been expected to return in December but this latest report claims he could be back as quickly as Saturday.

He scored 28 goals for United last season and the news that he could potentially face Newcastle on Saturday is a concern for Magpies fans.

His return would hand the Red Devils a huge boost as they look to close the eight-point gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City.

The news comes after it was announced that midfielder Paul Pogba is also expected to return.

It had been previously thought that the game at Old Trafford would come too soon for the French international.

Newcastle are currently 11th in the Premier League table but have lost their last two matches. They face a difficult run of fixtures over the festive period.

In other Newcastle United news, there is no truth in reports the Magpies are in pursuit of this World Cup and Champions League winner, according to a top journalist.
