Newcastle United have asked Manchester United about the availability of Luke Shaw, and have been put off by the £20million price tag, according to a report.
The Sun reports that Rafa Benitez was keen to add the left-back to his squad due to first-choice Paul Dummett still being ruled out due to a hamstring injury, but the Magpies are not willing to pay that much.
The same report also dismissed the possibility of a loan deal saying Jose Mourinho wants to get rid of the defender permanently.
This contradicts previous reports that believed Newcastle United would attempt to sign the 22-year-old on a temporary deal and avoid a heavy outlay.
The Magpies have been linked consistently with the England international, and are among the bookies favourite to sign the defender,so this a blow for Benitez’s transfer plans.
Football Insider Verdict
It’s a massive blow to Benitez and Newcastle United that they now look unlikely to acquire Shaw’s services in January or anytime soon. It’s likely that if Newcastle United were to make a big money move in January, they would aim to spend the funds on a proven goalscorer as this is the pressing problem now, with none of the strikers – Joselu, Mitrovic or Gayle – seemingly able to score in the Premier League. With Manchester United slapping such a big price-tag on the England international, the Magpies will hope no one is willing to pay it and that the price gets lowered. Or that Mourinho changes his mind and send the youngster out on loan.
