Report: Newcastle to submit bid for PL winger, release fee set at £5m

By Amir Mir

Newcastle are preparing to make a bid to sign Swansea winger Madou Barrow, according to a report.

The Chronicle claim that the Championship leaders have turned their attention to the 24-year-old to reinforce their attack and plan to submit a loan offer for the out-of-favour Swan.

It is said Rafa Benitez has Barrow on his wish list and is waiting to see if the Premier League side are open to a loan deal for the Gambian, who has a £5million release clause.

Recently appointed Swans boss Paul Clement has left the powerful attacker out of his squad for their last two games, which included a stunning 3-2 win against Liverpool at the weekend.

Barrow has played 19 games in all competitions this season, providing three assists, with his last appearance coming during the 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth in December.

It is said the Magpies want to re-sign their former player Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace but the London-based club are playing hardball over a possible deal.

Football Insider verdict:

If a deal for Barrow is secured then it will be a brilliant piece of transfer business for Benitez and the current Championship leaders. The Premier League player is a versatile player who would provide the north-east club with great attacking intent in the final third. He has proven in the top tier that he has the ability to get past players with his power and pace, so it will be a lot easier for him to do so in the Championship. Not only that, he will be joining a team that is excelling in the second tier as they aim for promotion, so he will not have any trouble settling into their attacking side. Either way, a possible permanent transfer at £5million or a loan deal, Benitez’ side don’t have much to lose, but more to gain on the Barrow deal.
