Manchester United have fixed their sights firmly on Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld after confirming a £52million for Shakhtar Donestk’s Fred, according to a report.
The Telegraph claims that Alderweireld has said he knows where he wants to play next season, with United’s interest clear.
United, who confirmed the deal for Fred on Tuesday, look keen to get their business done early in this window, with Porto full-back Diogo Dalot also expected to head to Old Trafford this week.
Football Insider verdict:
Alderweireld has said that he knows where he wants to play football next season but that Spurs could still make him stay. That seems very unlikely, given what happened at the end of last season. Alderweireld was fully fit but only played when it suited Mauricio Pochettino. In spite of that, Alderweireld has been entirely professional about the whole situation and plenty of other pro players – some much smaller in stature – could learn a lot from how he handled the situation. Some fans might hate the fact that he’s effectively held the club to ransom, but the 29-year-old can hardly blamed for wanting one last big move and contract. Could that be to Man United? It’s entirely possible and they obviously have the financial muscle, but would Daniel Levy really want to strengthen a direct Premier League rival? Because, let’s not mince words here, Alderweireld would make any Premier League side better.
