Tottenham are confident in their hopes of securing a deal for Everton’s Ross Barkley after their prolonged pursuit of the midfielder, according to a report.
Sports news website Bleacher Report claim on their website that the Lilywhites are only willing to offer the Toffees £15million for his services due to the fact his contract expires at the end of the season, but they believe they are the front runners for his signature.
It is stated that Mauricio Pochettino’s record of developing young English players during his time at the club is a key factor in convincing Barkley to join up with the likes of Dele Alli and Harry Kane, after rejecting a move to Spurs’ London rivals Chelsea in summer, during which the Argentine manager was also keen on a deal.
The 23-year-old has not appeared in the Premier League this season due to a hamstring injury, although is expected to be fit for the second half of the campaign, and has 179 outings for Everton to his name, as well as 22 England caps.
Football Insider verdict
Ross Barkley to Spurs is the transfer saga which refuses to die down and it appears to be only a matter of time until he is lining up under Mauricio Pochettino at Wembley or White Hart Lane. A price tag of £15million seems pretty reasonable in today’s market, especially for an experienced Premier League star and England international, with who prices are usually vastly inflated. There will be doubts over the immediate impact he will be able to make after his injury issues, and with a squad full of talent at Tottenham it will be questioned just where he is expected to fit in. Still, depth and quality is crucial to mounting an attack for silverware and that will be exactly Pochettino’s plan if and when he seals the deal for the midfielder.
