Tottenham have made a late move to capture Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes on loan but are struggling to secure a deal before the transfer deadline, according to a report.
The Guardian claim on the live transfer blog (31/01, 12:17) on their website that Spurs were looking to take the 24-year-old to Wembley for the second half of the season but that their hopes have been somewhat dashed, though the move is not totally ruled out.
The 27-cap Portuguese maestro has been a fringe figure for the European giants this season, with just nine starts in his 21 appearances for the La Liga table toppers, with injuries and illness limiting his game time.
Football Insider verdict
Tottenham may well have had the quietest transfer window of all the clubs at the top of the Premier League table, but it appears as though that was not due to a lack of trying. Gomes looked set to leave Barcelona this month but we are at the very end of January and nothing has happened, which may suggest a reluctance from the club to let him depart. Still, things can change very quickly and if Spurs are interested in his services, then they will be on the phone regularly trying to thrash out a late deal, which should be a possibility considering it is a loan, and not a permanent move.
In other Tottenham transfer news, a flop could see his summer deal torn up after a major bombshell.
