Chelsea hopes of signing Juventus left-back Alex Sandro in the summer transfer window have been dashed, according to a report.
Sky Sports Transfer Centre (12.58pm) quoted Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri after his side’s 2-0 defeat in a friendly against Tottenham.
Allegri said, “Alex Sandro is a Juventus player and he will stay one.”
He was then asked specifically about whether the player might move to Chelsea in the summer transfer window and Allegri replied, “No chance.”
That follows an earlier report in The Express that stated Conte was preparing a £54m bid for the player to strengthen his wing-back options ahead of a tough campaign in the Premier League and Champions League.
The Express said that Chelsea were confident that the deal – that would make Sandro the most expensive defender in the world, matching the amount that Manchester City paid for Kyle Walker this summer – would go through.
However, that looks to be a forlorn hope now, with the player looking set to stay at Juventus for at least another year.
The 26-year-old defender joined Juventus from Porto in August 2015 for £22million and the Brazilian – capped seven times for his country – is now one of the most sought-after players in the world.
Football Insider verdict:
It’s quickly becoming a summer to forget for Antonio Conte, with the Premier League set to kick-off next weekend. Troubles with Diego Costa, injuries to Eden hazard and Tiemoué Bakayoko, and losing out on Romelu Lukaku to rivals Manchester United have likely put the Italian in a foul mood. Losing to Arsenal in the Community Shield won’t have helped that – nor will the words from Allegri. No doubt Chelsea will see if an exceptional offer will tempt the club to change its mind, but the deal is looking very unlikely now.
In other Chelsea news, a four-year deal was signed as this defender left the club.
