Shearer: This is the huge amount of money Benitez needs to turn Newcastle into a PL side

Alan Shearer believes Newcastle need to spend a huge £150million in the summer transfer window to bolster their chance of staying in the Premier League.
Newcastle confirmed their instant return to the Premier League earlier this month, and with one Championship game remaining they have the chance to go up as champions.
Writing in his Sun column, Toon legend Shearer believes Rafa Benitez’s side need a major transfer overhaul in the summer and are eight new players away from being a mid-table side.
“There is a huge opportunity here for Newcastle to establish themselves again as a top-flight force. But he now needs, at the minimum, a £150million investment in players,” Shearer said.
“I am not convinced that will happen. Quite simply, he needs about eight new players just to turn Newcastle into a mid-table Premier League team.”

Benitez spent more than £50million on new talent last summer despite suffering relegation from the top flight on the likes of Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and Ciaran Clark.
However, former Magpies captain Shearer believes three times that is needed this summer if they are to avoid a Premier League relegation dogfight come this time next year.
The Toon are next in action on Sunday as they play host to Yorkshire outfit Barnsley at St. James’ Park, and need three points as well as hoping Brighton drop points to Aston Villa to be promoted as Championship champions.
In other Newcastle transfer news, fans have urged the Toon to put a deal in place that would see this 24-year-old play for the Magpies next season.
