Sky Sports pundit David Prutton doesn’t believe that Aston Villa will be able to earn three points in their Second City derby clash with Birmingham on Sunday.
Steve Bruce’s side travel to St Andrew’s this weekend looking to add more derby day misery on their bitter rivals, but Prutton has predicted that an “entertaining” game will end with both sides sharing the points in a 2-2 draw.
The ex-Leeds midfielder has backed Jonathan Kodjia to get the first goal of the game, but has suggested that the passion of the derby may fire up Steve Cotterill’s side after the poor defeat last week.
“If you can’t get yourself up for a game like this then what can you get yourself up for? The Second City derby returns and it should be a fabulous occasion as St Andrew’s. Steve Cotterill was riding high after winning his first game in charge against Cardiff, but Birmingham came down with a bit of a bump at Millwall last week and he’ll want a reaction here,” he said, on the Sky Sports website.
“Aston Villa, meanwhile, are in the play-offs and they’ll want to continue to close in on the top two, but I feel like this will be a draw. Albeit an entertaining one.”
The Villains are currently fifth in the Championship standings and know that a win this weekend could see them move up to fourth, above Leeds, as long as other results go their way.
Birmingham could be sent into the relegation zone by their ex-manager Bruce is they lose as they sit just one point clear of 22nd-placed Burton as it stands.
Villa have lost just one one of their last 12 Second City derby clashes dating back to 2005, meaning that history is certainly on their side going into the game.
However they have not won at St. Andrew’s in their last three visits, with the last victory there in 2009 when derby day specialist Gabriel Agbonlahor scored an 85th minute winner in a 1-0 triumph.
