'Something different' – Benitez raves over new arrival as he discusses debut
Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez has said that new arrival Martin Dubravka looks a fine talent but must fight for his place in the starting XI before making his debut.
The Slovakian international goalkeeper arrived at St James’ Park on a loan deal until the end of the season from Sparta Prague on deadline day, with an optional purchase clause included for the Magpies to snap hip up permanently if he impresses.
He was on the bench for his first match in the north east, as Karl Darlow was beaten from the penalty spot during the 1-1 draw away at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
However, the former Nottingham Forest man put in an impressive performance against the Eagles, pulling off some impressive stops to keep the Magpies in it, and as reiterated by Benitez, Dubravka faces a battle before being considered for a starting role, despite raving over his abilities.
He told the Chronicle: “He’s keen to play with his feet, I think he’s said that already, and it’s true.
“He’s very agile, has personality and has good English, so I think he’s a player with experience who can give us something different.
“But to play in the Premier League is different to any other league, so we have to decide when he’s ready to play in this league and if he can be ahead of the others.
“He has to compete and show where he is, just like the other ‘keepers.”
Dubravka has both Darlow and Republic of Ireland international Rob Elliot to compete with during the second half of the season, while Freddie Woodman and Matz Sels are currently both out on loan to Aberdeen and Anderlecht respectively.
Newcastle’s next game sees them play host to Manchester United, having been thrashed 4-1 by Jose Mourinho’s men back in December.
