Sources: Newcastle pull Ivan Toney U-turn after Eddie Howe change of mind

Newcastle United are not planning to sign Ivan Toney despite reports linking him to the North East club, sources have told Football Insider.

It is understood that the Tyneside outfit are no longer prioritising a new striker this summer and have therefore given up on their pursuit of the 27-year-old Brentford striker.

Eddie Howe has stressed the need to improve his side’s attacking output and creativity, but Newcastle’s recruitment team have turned towards signing an attacking midfielder over a striker following the impressive form of Alexander Isak.

The Swedish forward has scored five goals in his last six Premier League appearances for the Magpies, and Callum Wilson is considered a solid backup option for Newcastle’s striking department.

Brentford are open to selling Toney this summer, but only if a team matches their £50million valuation.

The Bees forward has scored 19 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions in 2022/23, placing him third in the Premier League Golden Boot race behind only Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.

Toney’s form also saw him called up to the England squad for the first time in September 2022 and he made his debut in March against Ukraine at Wembley.

Despite his impressive season, Newcastle are not willing to offer such a large fee for a striker, instead deciding to spread their summer budget improving multiple other positions.

Football Insider sources revealed on Friday (21 April) that Newcastle have created a shortlist of three Premier League stars to sign this summer.

Mason Mount, Harvey Barnes and James Ward-Prowse are now at the top of Newcastle’s shopping list, with Howe keen to strike some bargain deals if Leicester and Southampton are relegated.
