Sources: Tottenham confident of contract breakthrough after Mourinho intervention
Tottenham are confident of a breakthrough in contract talks with Troy Parrott after Jose Mourinho made clear his faith in the striker behind the scenes, Football Insider has learned.
The teenage striker, 17, has made two appearances for Spurs and it’s been made clear to him he has a big role to play in the second half of the season.
A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that the club are increasingly hopeful Parrott will agree to a new and improved deal after Mourinho made it clear how much he rates the youngster.
The Portugese has a reputation for not trusting young players, preferring to put his faith in senior men with proven track records.
But he has already blocked interest from clubs trying to take Parrott on loan for the second half of the season.
Mourinho has also emphasised to the Republic of Ireland international he will get more game in the second half of the season.
This could be enough for Parrott and his representatives to commit to a new long-term deal.
Football Insider revealed last month that the club have opened talks with Parrott over an improved contract to replace the deal he signed when he turned 17 in February.
His current deal, signed when he turned 17 in February, runs until the summer of 2021.
Parrott made his second Tottenham appearance when he came off the bench in their 5-0 demolition of Burnley earlier this month.
The teenager has been a prolific scorer for club and country at age-group levels, and was handed his first full Ireland cap by Mick McCarthy last month.
In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that the club have agreed £22m deal after Premier League rivals reject their 21-yr-old swoop.
