By Will Butcher

Steve Bruce has revealed that he is close to completing his first Aston Villa signing as manager.

The Midlands giants have been reportedly interested in a whole host of names, with chairman Tony Xia expected to back the promotion expert this month.

Speaking after Villa’s 1-0 loss to Cardiff on Monday, Bruce was quoted by his side’s official Twitter account as saying that a new signing is “imminent” at Villa Park.

“There is one deal we hope is imminent,” Bruce said. “But that is it as far as we’re aware.”

BBC journalist Pat Murphy revealed on Monday morning that Bruce’s side were close to completing a move for Manchester United stopper Sam Johnstone.
