Steven Gerrard backed to make sensational Rangers return after Russell Martin sack latest

Russell Martin is facing ongoing calls for his dismissal at Rangers despite a slow turnaround in their form in recent weeks.

Rangers’ 2-1 win against Livingston courtesy of Max Aarons’ 94th-minute winner means they have now won two of their last three games after a dismal start.

The win is believed to have eased some of the pressure on the boss’ position, with the Rangers hierarchy keen to give him time to win back favour.

However, Martin remains at risk of being sacked by Rangers as they sit eighth in the league table, seven points short of Celtic and nine shy of league leaders Hearts.

Rangers fans continued to chant for Martin to be sacked immediately following their last-minute winner, with more work needed to win over the supporters.

Steven Gerrard in line to replace Russell Martin at Rangers

One manager who has been backed to immediately win over the supporters at Ibrox is Steven Gerrard, who has been out of work since leaving Al-Ettifaq in January.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Gerrard will “always” be a contender to take over at Ibrox.

The boss’ previous spell came between 2018 and 2021, when he helped Rangers lift the SPFL title, and he remains well-liked around the club and by the fans.

Gerrard is always going to be one Rangers look at,” he told Football Insider.

“He knows the club well, knows a lot of the staff and people around the place, and he was very well-liked by the fans when he was there as well, I’m sure the fans would love it if he came back.

“He did a good job during his time there, obviously won them the league and then got a move elsewhere which didn’t quite work out.

“I think he’s exactly the type of manager they need, because he’s somebody who the fans and the players can get behind and somebody who is going to push them forward.

“Martin hasn’t worked, the fans aren’t on board with what he’s doing and at times it looks like the players aren’t either, his style just isn’t a good fit.

“Gerrard is more focused on getting the best out of the players rather than trying to make them fit a set system, and that’s what they need.

“Like I said, he knows the club, knows the people, knows the fanbase, and he’d be able to go in there and immediately get everybody pulling in the same direction.”

This comes after Ibrox legend Ally McCoist tipped Gerrard to return to Rangers, and make a clear impact, labelling him “tremendous”.

Rangers’ shortlist of options to replace Martin revealed

Football Insider revealed on 21 September that Rangers have begun assessing alternatives to Martin with a number of candidates believed to be keen on the position.

Alongside Gerrard, Sean Dyche has been tipped to take over at Rangers if the boss is dismissed, while the likes of Davide Ancelotti was linked with the role.

The hierarchy considered a number of potential candidates before opting to hire Martin in the summer, with Gerrard also coming into their thinking at the time.

Football Insider revealed in May that Gerrard was the favourite to take over at Rangers, before new owners 49ers Enterprises opted to go with Martin.

While the owners are still keen to back their choice, should they be placed into a difficult position by their dismal results, a change will have to be made.
