Steven Gerrard wants to bring former manager Walter Smith back to Ibrox to help him kickstart a challenge on the Scottish Premiership.
He will speak to the 70-year-old when he gets back from the Rangers training camp in Spain.
It could even lead to an advisory role for Smith, who enjoyed two successful stints at Ibrox.
“My main priority right now is getting myself settled in Glasgow and getting myself settled in the role,” Gerrard said in the Scottish Sun.
“Then I will certainly be leaning on the likes of Walter Smith and Graeme Souness and and bending their ears – they will probably be getting sick of the sight of me.
“I haven’t really thought about it in terms of roles or at what level we want to use him [Smith].
“I think we just want to get him round the table and have a chat with him — get his thoughts and his experience, how he saw last year and get some advice.”
Gerrard has said he might lean on Kenny Dalglish for advice too, even though the former Liverpool striker is a Celtic man.
Football Insider verdict:
Gerrard might not have any experience of managing at the top level, but he’s making sure he surrounds himself with people who have. With Gary McAllister as his assistant, he’s already got someone who’s managed at the top level. And he’s got an extensive list of contacts in his phone and it looks like he’s ready to use them. Walter Smith and Graeme Souness both know exactly what it’s like to manage at Ibrox, and both would be able to give Gerrard some invaluable advice. Having Smith in a more formal advisory role would be a great idea, although Gerrard must make sure he’s not getting too many different voices chipping in with advice. Ultimately he’ll know how he wants his Ranger side to play and it’s almost time to see his side in action. As for Dalglish? He’s a Celtic man and it will be interesting to see if Gerrard can call in some favours to get Dalglish’s take on the situation. One thing is for sure, Gerrard is leaving no stone unturned as he bids to make a success of his first senior management role. If he catches Celtic this season it would be one of the most impressive feats any new manager has done.
