Steven Gerrard ‘would quickly sort’ glaring Russell Martin problem at Rangers
Steven Gerrard may be able to immediately sort out one issue at Rangers if he is appointed the club’s next manager.
Gerrard could take charge for the second time at Ibrox after leading the club to the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership title before leaving to manage Premier League club Aston Villa.
Russell Martin’s sacking at Rangers after 123 days means they’re on the lookout for a third permanent manager this calendar year.
It was exclusively revealed by Football Insider that Gerrard would return to Rangers if given the opportunity to do so following a spell out of the game after leaving his last job in Saudi Arabia in January.

Former Rangers chairman backs Steven Gerrard appointment
Martin leaves the club eighth in the Scottish Premiership table following Rangers’ 1-1 draw at Falkirk.
The next manager already has a challenge securing a top two finish this season, with Rangers currently nine points behind second placed Celtic.
Former Rangers chairman Dave King, who appointed Gerrard as manager back in 2018, wants the former Liverpool captain back at the club.
“I would love to see Steven back at the club,” King said on STV [6 October].
“He’s a winner and will get more out of the squad than we have witnessed so far,”
“We have been watching a team that doesn’t seem to have a plan for what to do when in possession and when out of possession. Steven would quickly sort that out.”
Martin was criticised for his stubborn tactics, and the next Gers boss will be expected to be more tactically flexible.
Gerrard faces tougher Rangers job despite previous pedigree
During his title winning campaign in charge of Rangers, Gerrard oversaw a team that amassed an incredible 102 and went unbeaten across the league season.
Rangers were free flowing going forward and solid defensively, something the fans expect from their team domestically.
Goals per match | 2.4 |
Expected Goals | 74.9 |
Goals Conceded per match | 0.3 |
Clean Sheets | 26 |
Gerrard had four players in double figures for goals, something which looks increasingly unlikely to happen this season.
Martin leaves Gerrard, or whoever becomes the next Rangers manager, a squad with potential but which is currently not good enough to win the league.
Gerrard may therefore experience a tougher time at Rangers if he returns.
