Exclusive: Stoke City finalise Wilmot signing today after fee and contract agreed

Stoke City are today finalising the signing of Watford defender Ben Wilmot, Football Insider understands.

The 21-year-old has headed to the Championship club for a medical after terms were agreed with the Premier League new boys.

A recruitment source told Football Insider that Stoke will pay around £3million in total for Wilmot, who is expected to put pen to paper on a four-year contract.

The deal could be announced later today if the paperwork can be completed.

Wilmot is entering the final year of his Watford deal but the club does reportedly have the option to extend his contract until 2023.

Stoke could soon be £3m up if their asking price for Sam Clucas is met amid interest from West Brom, as revealed by this site on 20th June.

The club are looking to restructure their finances ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.

Wilmot, a four-time England Under-21 international, featured 25 times for Xisco Munoz’s promotion-winning side last season.

But he started just one match and made only nine appearances in total since January.

Wilmot began his career with Stevenage in League Two and played 15 times for them before being snapped up by Watford in 2018.

The specific figure was undisclosed but Stevenage revealed that it was their all-time record transfer fee.

He later spent time on loan with the Hornets’ sister club Udinese in Serie A and Swansea City in the Championship.

Stoke finished in 14th in the second-tier last term and 31 points behind 2nd-place Watford.

The Potters have also set their sights on signing soon-to-be free agent Corry Evans, as revealed by this site on 21st June.
