Sunderland could seal 'great' Bonne signing after source update - Phillips

Queens Park Rangers striker Macauley Bonne would be “a great option” for Sunderland, according to Kevin Phillips.

The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, stressed the importance of the Black Cats signing a striker to ease the pressure on Ross Stewart.

Lee Johnson has just one senior striker at his disposal after Nathan Broadhead suffered a long-term hamstring injury.

A Sunderland source told Football Insider (6 January) that the Wearside club are chasing QPR’s Bonne this month, along with promotion rivals Wigan Athletic.

Bonne is currently on loan at Ipswich Town, where he has scored 11 goals in 23 league games.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Bonne’s credentials, Phillips said: “He could be a great option.

“Anyone who can come in at this stage of the season and score goals would be a big asset to Lee Johnson.

“I think it’s an area Sunderland need to look at, even though Ross Stewart is bang in form. I just think with Broadhead missing they need another striker. If Ross gets injured, who is going to get the goals?

“Anyone who has proven they can score at that level would be a great signing because one thing is for sure, you are going to get opportunities playing for Sunderland. There is some brilliant creative players there. They just need someone to put it in the back of the net.

“Bonne has got the credentials. The only question is – can he handle the expectation? The pressure will come later in the season.”
