Talks underway: Mark Allen in discussions over new deal for Rangers key player - confirmed
Graeme Murty has confirmed that Rangers director of football Mark Allen has been holding talks with Alfredo Morelos over a new contract.
Morelos, 21, was widely reported to be the subject of numerous bids from the Chinese Super League in the late stages of the January transfer window with the Daily Record reporting that £7.5million had been rejected by the Light Blues.
The Colombian forward is said to be one the lowest earning players at Ibrox following his summer switch from HJK Helsinki for £1million.
However since then he has torn up the Scottish Premiership and is top goalscorer in the competition with 11 goals.
It is understood that Rangers are bracing themselves for yet more offers for Morelos as the Chinese Super League transfer window does not close until the end of February.
But Murty has detailed that he and the club’s hierarchy are in talks over a new deal for not only Morelos, but a whole host of players.
“If you think of his valuation, it probably bodes us well we look at his deal and make sure he’s happy being here,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“We’re discussing players’ contracts right now. Even if they have a length of time left on their contracts, we need to make sure we protect for the club, that we have to reward if they’re doing really well.
“Alfredo comes into that bracket but he’s not the only one. He’s just the most high-profile at the moment.
“Talks are ongoing between the director of football and board at all times regarding the player.”
David Bates is another first-team player who is out of contract at the end of the season.
Rangers have already seen the impact of allowing players’ contracts’ to run down when Danny Wilson left Ibrox in a shock move to MLS franchise Colorado Rapids in the summer for a minimal fee.
They will no doubt hope that Morelos does agree terms to a new deal though as the centre-forward is clearly a key player in Murty’s plans going forward.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have been tipped by the bookies to sign this former Celtic forward who is now a free agent.
