Andros Townsend’s camp have told Newcastle that he would be interested in a return to the club, according to a report.
The Telegraph claim that the Crystal Palace winger has admitted that it was a mistake leaving the Championship side in the summer.
The 25-year-old left the north east after their relegation last season and made a £13million switch to Palace.
But, it is said that the Championship leaders have made a bold move to bring the England international back to St James’ Park, six months after selling him.
Townsend has struggled for form and consistency since moving to Selhurst Park, scoring just one goal and providing three assists in 23 games in all competitions.
It is said recently appointed Palace manager Sam Allardyce is willing to sacrifice the winger as long as he can get enough money for his services.
Despite that alerting Newcastle, it is claimed that manager Rafa Benitez does not have the transfer budget he would have hoped for this month and the Spaniard has only been looking at loan deals.
As a result, Benitez’ side, who are seven points clear of third-placed Leeds, have reportedly proposed that the deal is made permanent if they are promoted this season.
Allardyce’s side are battling relegation in the Premier League after the club sacked Alan Pardew in December – the former Newcastle man purchased Townsend in the summer.
But, it is claimed that Palace are not keen on that option because it does not give Allardyce money to invest.
Football Insider verdict:
This latest update would please the Newcastle faithful and it is a move the club should make. Townsend, even though he has struggled in the Premier League, would tear the Championship to shreds with his direct play and pace. He enjoyed his previous spell at St James’ Park under the stewardship of Benitez, so there shouldn’t be too much of a problem for him to reclaim that form if he were to return. Benitez’ side currently sit top of the Championship table, but they could do with a push over the line and with a top quality signing like this, they could run away with the title within a few months.
