Football Insider debates which three Newcastle players are definite starters for the club if they earn promotion to the Premier League.
An obvious first choice for Rafa Benitez given the number of goals he has scored this season in the second tier and how pivotal he has been to the Spaniard’s plans. Dwight Gayle has previous Premier League experience with Crystal Palace and for some, he was unfortunate not to play more regularly for the London club. Nonetheless, all that experience and quality will be important to the club in the attacking department.
The former Liverpool midfielder has proven that he is far too good for the Championship. Even in the top tier, on his day, he could hurt many opponents. His ability on the ball from his passing to his long range shooting will be crucial to the Magpies bringing that fear factor with them upon their return to the PL.
A summer signing from Aston Villa, centre-back Ciaran Clark has been a success this season outperforming his fellow defensive partner and captain, Jamaal Lascelles. His previous experiences in the top flight may have resulted in a number of relegation battles, but under Benitez, that experience can be put to good use. Perhaps the most important aspect of Newcastle’s play next term will be their defensive structure if that is not solid enough then they will struggle.
In other Newcastle news, Simon Jordan has hit out at the Magpies fans and compared them with Leeds supporters.
