29-year-old must be sold: Three things we learned about Newcastle in win v Huddersfield
COMMENT By Harvey Byrne
Football Insider analyses three talking points from Newcastle’s 3-1 win against Huddersfield on Saturday evening.
Newcastle’s to lose
The win on Saturday has ensured that Newcastle are now five points clear of second placed Brighton and an entire 11 points clear of third placed Huddersfield. Fans will not accept that anything is decided until the season’s end, but with just 11 matches left of the second tier campaign it is now fair to say that the league is Newcastle’s to lose. The north east giants have now picked up crucial wins against each of the Terriers, Aston Villa and Brighton in their last four matches and they will be hoping to continue that run against Reading in midweek.
Darlow proved why he’s number one
Karl Darlow has come in for some stick in recent clashes and with the strength the Magpies have in their goalkeeping department the 26-year-old could have found himself out of the team. However, against Huddersfield on Saturday evening he pulled off a number of crucial saves for his team and proved why he’s now the club’s first choice shot stopper. The former Nottingham Forest man will now be pivotal in ensuring the north east giants make an instant return to the Premier League.
Diame’s well below Premier League quality
Newcastle made a lot of signings in the summer to ensure they could make an immediate return to England’s top flight, but there is still a question as to whether they can do it in the Premier League. However, after Mohamed Diame’s performance against both Brighton in midweek and now Huddersfield that question no longer lies over the 29-year-old. The Senegal international can’t trap a bag of cement in the English second tier and it is clear that he is far below the quality the Magpies need for when they do make their return to the Premier League and he must be sold in the summer, so that he doesn’t take up a spot in the 25-man squad.
