Tottenham attacking midfielder suffers injury blow in goal-fest

By Harry Sykes

Tottenham academy ace Keanan Bennetts broke down with an injury in his side’s stunning 5-3 FA Youth Cup win at Newcastle on Monday night.

The attacking midfielder had scored the opening goal in the Under-18s’ triumph at St James’ Park, smashing a left-footer inside the near post after three minutes.

But Bennetts limped off at the 29-minute mark with his team two goals ahead and seemingly in control.

Bennetts, 17, who has a growing reputation in Spurs’ academy as a dangerous attacker, left the pitch with an unspecified injury.

Newcastle mounted a spirited comeback but goals from Reo Griffiths, Japhet Tanganga, Kazaiah Sterling and Dylan Duncan added to Bennetts’ early effort to seal the win for Tottenham in the goal-fest.

It means Spurs have sealed a place in the last four of the prestigious youth tournament and will face Chelsea in the semi-final.

Spurs’ academy has produced a number of players for the first team in recent years, including poster boy Harry Kane, Danny Rose, Nabil Bentaleb, Ryan Mason, Tom Carroll, Andros Townsend, Harry Winks and Josh Onomah.

Tottenham’s senior side were also involved in a high-scoring encounter on Sunday – albeit a one-sided one – as they demolished Stoke 4-0 in the Premier League.
