Tottenham could now sign 'real talent' Djed Spence after what 'I've seen in person' - expert

Alex McLeish has insisted Tottenham could sign a “real talent” in Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence after watching him in action for Nottingham Forest.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 21-year-old would be one of several Championship stars being eyed by Premier League sides this summer.

As reported by Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg (26 April), Tottenham are among five clubs to have tabled offers for the right-sided wing-back.

Tottenham insider John Wenham, speaking to Football Insider (7 April), suggested Spurs were in “fairly advanced” talks for Spence.

McLeish was in attendance at Craven Cottage to watch Forest beat Fulham 1-0 on Tuesday night (26 April).

He hailed Spence as a standout performer who deserves to be linked with Premier League sides.

Asked if he thought Spence could step up to a club like Spurs, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I’ve seen him in person the once.

“But it was a pretty impressive performance for Forest on the night. It was very enterprising going forward and (he) defended well at the right moments.

“They got a wee bit of luck once or twice. He is one of the many that, when teams get into this position in that league, teams watch and scrutinise.

“In Spence, he’s definitely a real talent.”

Spence joined Forest on loan from Boro last summer and has made 40 appearances this season.

The Fulham youth graduate also made his England under-21s debut back in March.
