Jan Vertonghen would probably be a big shout for a place in the starting XI of the Premier League team of the season, but Tottenham fans were convinced he was playing at far less than 100% on Wednesday night.
The same could possibly be levelled against Harry Kane as well, but the Tottenham striker scored the winner at one end, while Vertonghen helped keep a clean sheet at the other.
The 1-0 win secured Champions League football for Tottenham, with Chelsea unable to beat Huddersfield at Stamford Bridge.
It marks the end of another satisfying season for Tottenham, but it was a nervy night at Wembley, with Newcastle coming so close to breaking Spurs fans’ hearts – no more so than Jonjo Shevley who hit the woodwork in the first half.
However, Spurs held strong and Kane, like so often, proved to be the hero, netting in the 50th minute.
Tottenham fans love Vertonghen but were hugely concerned about him on Wednesday night, especially in the first-half, when he was curiously off the pace and seemingly still feeling the knock he picked up at the weekend.
Here are the best reactions from Tottenham fans to a strange performance from their defensive rock:
Toby needs to come on for Vertonghen….he's still injured #TOTNEW

Vertonghen and Kane are both woefully unfit. Get them off. And we’re losing the midfield battle. Poch totally to blame for that first half. Picking names over suitability and fitness

I am getting physically sick watching this pile of garbage. Vertonghen and Kane seriously out of form. Need Lucas ASAP #COYS

I can’t ever remember moving the ball this slowly & we’ve played some sh*t games recently. From vertonghen to the 2 in midfield, Son & Kane, they all look so off

Vertonghen is off the pace and clearly unfit, Toby and Lucas are key to this game… it’s almost as if the club don’t want to get top 4… obviously they do but it’s bizarre, surely you should be playing your best and fittest players? #THFC #COYS #TOTNEW

If Vertonghen isn't fit then get him off. Madness when you've got the best defender in the league on the bench. Who knew Sissoko and Wanyama wouldn't work? ????
— Nursey (@3YardScreamer) May 9, 2018
Vertonghen clearly looks like he’s playing with an injury.

The one game we need Vertonghen to be on it and he’s having a mare
— Harry???????? (@harrypell_) May 9, 2018
Vertonghen is having a mare, is he fit?! He might have to come off at HT at this rate.
— Chris Miller (@WindyCOYS) May 9, 2018
I have never seen vertonghen play so poor ????
— George (@georgeachillea) May 9, 2018
Sanchez and Vertonghen are having shockers! #COYS
— Gary Hodsden (@GMHodsden) May 9, 2018
Vertonghen having his worst game.. we keep giving the ball away cheaply…

In other Tottenham news, Levy will be making huge mistake if Tottenham player tweet ends up coming true
