'Garbage', 'Bizarre' – Tottenham fans shocked by display of one player in 1-0 win v Newcastle
Jan Vertonghen would probably be a big shout for a place in the starting XI of the Premier League team of the season, but Tottenham fans were convinced he was playing at far less than 100% on Wednesday night.
The same could possibly be levelled against Harry Kane as well, but the Tottenham striker scored the winner at one end, while Vertonghen helped keep a clean sheet at the other.
The 1-0 win secured Champions League football for Tottenham, with Chelsea unable to beat Huddersfield at Stamford Bridge.
It marks the end of another satisfying season for Tottenham, but it was a nervy night at Wembley, with Newcastle coming so close to breaking Spurs fans’ hearts – no more so than Jonjo Shevley who hit the woodwork in the first half.
However, Spurs held strong and Kane, like so often, proved to be the hero, netting in the 50th minute.
Tottenham fans love Vertonghen but were hugely concerned about him on Wednesday night, especially in the first-half, when he was curiously off the pace and seemingly still feeling the knock he picked up at the weekend.
