Tottenham fans react on Twitter to potential 22-year-old debut v Watford

By Dominic Toner

Tottenham may be forced to turn to third-choice goalkeeper Pau Lopez against Watford – and the club supporters were supportive of a potential debut on Twitter.

Spurs shot stoppers Hugo Lloris (illness) and Michel Vorm (knee) are both being assessed ahead of the Premier League clash against Watford on Saturday afternoon.

Lopez would be the next in line to fill the Spurs goal if their senior options are ruled out, meaning the 22-year-old could be handed a first team debut.

The Spaniard moved to White Hart Lane in the summer on a season-long loan from Espanyol and is yet to feature in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

However, he has made six appearances for the Under-21s and does have experience of playing in La Liga.

Spurs fans showed their encouragement for Lopez and will be hoping he can make a seamless transition to the senior squad if required.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Lopez has had to be extremely patient this season and has made the substitutes bench just twice in the Premier League so far, including in the 3-1 win over Swansea on Wednesday.

He has found himself down the pecking order and unable to compete with experienced Premier League goalkeeper Lloris and Vorm.

Spurs statistically have the best defensive record in the top flight and Pochettino has found a settled backline.

Lopez would be under immense pressure if he is handed a start as Spurs search for the three points to close the gap to Premier League leaders Chelsea.
