Tottenham fans react on Twitter to nickname reportedly given by insiders to club wonderkid

By Alex Taylor

Tottenham wonderkid Marcus Edwards has been nicknamed ‘mini-Messi’ by club insiders – and fans on Twitter have had a mixed reaction to the news.

The Telegraph claim that Edwards, 17, has been likened to five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi for his stature and style of play.

The youngster is in line to feature in the third round of the League Cup on Wednesday evening as Tottenham take on League One outfit Gillingham at White Hart Lane.

Supporters on social media had differing reactions to the nick-name. Some fans believed it was too early to compare Edwards to Messi while others claimed somewhat optimistically that the academy graduate was already better than the Barcelona all-time great.

Here is a selection of the messages on Twitter:

Edwards will be hoping to live up to his new-found namesake if he features against The Gills.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have made a strong start to their domestic campaign, having already beaten Sunderland, Stoke and Crystal Palace.

The solid start leaves Tottenham third in the Premier League table with 11 points after five games.

Supporters will now be hoping the north London outfit can push on the in the Cup and secure some silverware this season.

In other Tottenham news, Etienne Capoue has scored four goals in his first five games of the new Premier League season – and Spurs fans are wondering on Twitter where this player was when at White Hart Lane.
