While there are few certainties when it comes to Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI at Tottenham, the position of goalkeeper is an absolute given.
When fully fit, Hugo Lloris is the number one option for league and Champions League outings – no surprise considering he is also the club captain.
Behind him, Michel Vorm has played the role of understudy admirably, stepping up and putting in confident and consistent displays in his rare outings – and he seems happy to have remained as the Lilywhites’ number two, with Paulo Gazzaniga rounding off the three senior shot stoppers.
However, that looks set to change, with the Dutch keeper’s contract set to expire this summer and no new deal on its way.
The 34-year-old has a couple of years left in him but after playing second fiddle for so long, it should come as no surprise that both parties are willing to part ways in a bid to give him one final hurrah in his career.
So does Gazzaniga get automatically promoted to number two?
Not if the report from the Sun is anything to go by, stating that Spurs are considering launching a move for Manchester United shot stopper Sam Johnstone on a free transfer this summer, after impressing with Aston Villa in the Championship.
His arrival would signal a battle for a place on the bench, but neither of the proposed Spurs pair are going to put Lloris under pressure, something he could do with considering his recent wobbles.
While Johnstone might be a bargain, Spurs are looking at the wrong Manchester United man, and should have their sights set on 31-year-old Sergio Romero.
The Argentine is United’s own Vorm, but there is no doubt the Red Devils fringe figure is an upgrade on the Lilywhites’ current star.
He might not be happy sitting as second choice but that is what Lloris really needs to push his performances, for it seems he is getting too comfortable between the sticks, and Romero would be a worthy competitor to battle it out for a first team spot.
In other Tottenham transfer news, the club’s top target must be a powerhouse sensation after a big money revelation.
