Tottenham, Newcastle stars react to ‘boring’ message from Burnley’s Jaidon Anthony
Newcastle striker Callum Wilson and Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke reacted to a message from Jaidon Anthony after Burnley’s promotion was confirmed.
With two games remaining in the Championship, Burnley‘s 2-1 win over Sheffield United means Scott Parker’s side are heading back to the Premier League.
Celtic target Josh Brownhill opened the scoring for the Clarets in the 28th minute, before former Stoke striker Tom Cannon levelled for the visitors.
However, Burnley’s captain was on a mission to avoid any doubt going into the final games of the season, and he stepped up to confidently put a penalty past Michael Cooper in the Blades’ net, condemning Chris Wilder’s side to the playoffs.
Jaidon Anthony celebrates ‘boring’ Burnley promotion
Following the win, Anthony shared several photos of himself enjoying Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League on Instagram, captioned: “Boring boring promotion”.
The post was then liked by Newcastle’s Wilson and Tottenham’s Solanke, both former teammates of Anthony from their time at Bournemouth.
Parker’s side have received criticism for their cautious playstyle, which has seen them draw 16 games on their way to promotion.
However, having lost just twice, whilst only conceding 15 times, any condemnation of the former Fulham manager’s style of football falls rather flat on its face.
Burnley primed to survive Premier League with star-studded lineup
Football Insider Verdict
Having lost several key players following their relegation last season, including Sander Berge, Wilson Odobert, and Dara O’Shea, with manager Vincent Kompany also leaving, uncertainty shrouded Burnley.
Hindsight now tells us that any concerns about the Claret’s ability to return to the Premier League were severely misplaced.
Whilst Parker has struggled in his two previous stints in England’s top tier, there should be no doubt that Burnley have the playing squad to survive next season.
| Match stats | Burnley | Sheffield United |
| Possession | 52% | 48% |
| Shots (on target) | 10 (4) | 15 (4) |
| Expected goals | 2.04 xG | 0.80 xG |
| Big chances (missed) | 4 (2) | 2 (1) |
| Corners | 3 | 4 |
Built on a core of defensive solidity, Everton target Maxime Esteve, Conrad Egan-Riley, and James Trafford are all Premier League-ready.
Whilst some more attacking options will be sought after in the coming transfer window, the backline that has broken record after record this season will give Parker his best chance yet of being a successful manager in the top tier.
