Tottenham are “pushing hard” to sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claimed in their live transfer blog on Thursday [01:47pm] that Spurs may be lagging behind in the race to sign the dazzling playmaker as Premier League rivals West Ham appear to be his preferred option if he moved to England.
It is understood that Gomes, 24, is good friends with Hammers centre-back Jose Fonte after winning the Euro 2016 title together while playing for Portugal last summer.
Barca only signed Gomes last year and it is said that they are not willing to let him leave the Nou Camp at this stage as they cannot guarantee bringing in a replacement.
However the Mail adds that this story will develop some late drama before Thursday night’s transfer deadline is reached.
Gomes was largely used as a rotational player in the Barcelona squad last season as he made 47 appearances across all competitions, although most of them came from coming off the bench.
The 25-times Portugal international, who is known for his fine passing ability, has only played once so far this term after suffering with a couple of minor injuries.
Football Insider Verdict
Tottenham need to make some good additions to their squad before Thursday night’s cut-off and Gomes would be a seriously good signing. Having impressed Barcelona enough to play him almost 50 times last season, Gomes would no doubt become a pivotal player in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad should he sign for them ahead of West Ham. It’s strange to think that the Barca ace would sign for Slaven Bilic’s side ahead of Spurs though. Although he has a good friend there, he deserves to be in a team that is going to be playing in the Champions League and fighting for the title.
