Tottenham tipped to sign De Vrij and playmaker as No1 Conte target revealed - pundit

Alan Hutton has tipped Tottenham to sign a creative midfielder and a new centre-back in January following Antonio Conte’s appointment.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider’s Russell Edge, the former Spurs defender insisted the new manager would want a couple of signings through the door in the winter window.

As revealed by Football Insider (2nd November), Conte has told managing director Fabio Paratici he wants to sign Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij in January.

The 29-year-old is regarded as the manager’s number one target for defence even though it would take £40m to prise him from Italy.

De Vrij played 88 times under Conte, missing just six games from a possible 48.

Hutton admitted Spurs could do with “freshening up” at the heart of defence.

He suggested a creative midfielder to complement Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp would also be on Conte’s shopping list.

Asked where he thought Spurs need to strengthen, Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I think they need a little bit more creativity in central midfield.

“I know Hojbjerg and Skipp in there, but they’re not really going to create much going forward. They have had problems with others in there so that could be a problem area.

“Definitely defence. I mean, Dier, Sanchez, Romero, he’s obviously just come in. All these kind of guys, is it time to freshen that up?

“There are a few areas where I think he will look at. He’ll definitely want to strengthen come January.”
