'Touch of class' - Rangers manager raves about gesture from international boss
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has revealed England manager Gareth Southgate sent him a message shortly after he was confirmed as Gers boss on May 4th – calling the gesture a “touch of class.”
The Gers boss admits he has been impressed by Southgate since taking over as England manager as he prepares for the “biggest couple of months of his life.”
Gerrard revealed Southgate was “one of the first” to message him – and Gerrard was touched given Southgate’s hectic schedule in the build-up to the World Cup.
“It was a touch of class, that,” says Gerrard, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
“It’s the biggest, most important time he will ever have as a manager and he took the time to get in touch with me. He was actually one of the first to text me. ‘How much has he got going on? He didn’t have to do it.
“But here’s the England manager, preparing for the biggest couple of months of his life, and he had time to drop me a message. I think he has got the balance right on what he is trying to do and I have been impressed by what he has done so far.”

Football Insider verdict:
Gerrard will have been inundated with messages after taking charge at Ibrox but it speaks volumes of Southgate that he took the time to get in contact with the Gers boss. With the World Cup looming large, it would have been easy to have ignored it and not reached out. It also says so much about the respect people within the game have for the Rangers boss that they contacted Gerrard after his appointment. Now he’s in the door though, the platitudes count for nothing and Gerrard will be judged on what his side does on the pitch, not who is congratulating him. With less than a month until Gerrard’s first competitive game in charge, attention will quickly turn to getting his team prepared and making sure they avoid a repeat of last year’s European humiliation at the hands of Progres Niederkorn. Then the league action gets underway and expectations will really ramp up.
